Edward H. Betof, Ed. D. is a Senior Fellow in Human Capital at The Conference Board. He is the President, Betof Associates LLC and also serves an adjunct executive and executive team coach for the Center for Creative Leadership. Ed specializes in executive and leadership development, executive and executive team coaching, career assessment and planning. His areas of expertise also include coaching leaders as they transition into new roles and coaching leaders to serve as teachers and coaches.

In 1998, Ed co-developed (with Ray Harrison Ph.D.) a new form of executive coaching, “Newly Appointed Leader Coaching” designed for leaders who are about to, or have just been appointed or promoted, to a new leadership role. Ed served as the Program Director for The Conference Board Executive Council on Talent and Organization Development from 2010 to 2018. For three years Ed was the coach/facilitator for The Conference Board Global Executive Program an innovative high-potential program that Ed co-designed for executives who were one or two years away from moving into a C-suite role.

He was a co-developer of the pioneering The Conference Board/NASA experiential leadership program based upon NASA’s Apollo program. Ed was honored to serve two, two-year terms as an external member of The Conference Board Management Committee. He has been a faculty member with the Institute for Management Studies since 2008. Ed was the founding Senior Fellow and an Academic Director of the University of Pennsylvania’s Chief Learning Officer doctoral program.

After nearly a forty-year corporate and educational leadership career, Ed retired in December, 2007 from BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) a global medical technology, life science and human diagnostics company where he was the Worldwide Vice President of Talent Management and Chief Learning Officer. The “Leaders as Teachers” approach Ed conceived and led at BD University won a top three “Best Award” from ASTD (now ATD) in 2007. Ed was an ASTD Board member from 2004-07.

During this period, he also chaired the executive committee of The Conference Board Council on Learning, Development and Organizational Performance. Ed served on Pennsylvania State University’s Outreach Advisory Board from 2007-2015. He is the author of Leaders as Teachers: Unlock the Teaching Potential of Your Company’s Best and Brightest (2009) and co-author of Leaders as Teachers Action Guide (2014). Ed co-authored with his wife Nila Betof Ph.D., Just Promoted: A 12 Month Roadmap for Success in Your New Leadership Role (1992, 2010) and Leadership Lessons for Any Occasion: Stories of Our Mothers (2018). Ed has authored or co-authored several dozen articles, manuals and guides. He received his Doctorate from Temple University in 1976.
