Jeff Alter, CEO for Sound Physicians, is a longtime healthcare leader with a passion for patients. His focus is building a premier medical group that brings better care to the communities Sound serves.

Jeff is driven by the desire to build practice partnerships that deliver hyper-local care attuned to community needs. He works closely with his executive leadership team to ensure Sound’s 4,000-plus clinicians are empowered with the right tools and support to care for their patients.

Prior to Sound, Jeff served as CEO of one of the largest independent multispecialty and urgent care medical groups, Summit Health. Jeff also served as Executive Vice President of Anthem Health Solutions and President of IngenioRx, now CarelonRx. There, he led all of Anthem’s clinical, network, and high-value analytics, including HealthCore, as well as Anthem’s pharmacy business, which serves nearly 44 million lives.

From 2011 through 2018, Jeff was CEO for UnitedHealthcare’s commercial group, a $55B entity that served nearly 30 million consumers. As CEO, he oversaw the management of health benefits for individuals, public sector employers, labor funds, and businesses of all sizes, including more than half of the Fortune 100 companies. The commercial group also served nearly three million active duty and retired U.S. military personnel and their families in the TRICARE West Region. Prior to his tenure as CEO with United’s commercial group, Jeff also held the role of Northeast Regional CEO for United from 2008 until 2011. His time in that role was marked by effectively serving employers’ and consumers’ healthcare needs, building relationships with brokers, regulators, government leaders, and other constituents, and developing new and innovative programs and tools that reached multiple new markets.

Jeff’s career in healthcare also includes roles as Chief Operating Officer for United’s Northeast Region; Vice President of Strategic Financial Planning for Oxford Health Plans, where he led their budget, financial planning, merger and acquisition, and strategic initiatives, and Vice President of Finance and Operations at Vytra Health Plans.

Jeff currently serves on numerous boards of nonprofit and for-profit organizations including The Long Island Association, and St. John’s University in New York.

Jeff received his Bachelor of Science in marketing and a Master of Business Administration in finance from St. John’s University.

A proud father and husband, Jeff and his wife, Lisa, have four children and live on Long Island, N.Y.
