Emily is an assistant professor of journalism at Indiana University’s School of Journalism.

Emily's general area of expertise focuses on the disruptive impact of interactive technology on established media and political institutions. Her dissertation examined the impact of state-focused political blogs on politics around the United States.

Emily has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and a master’s degree from The George Washington University. She is a former U.S. diplomat with additional professional experience at the National Defense University and the United States Institute of Peace.

Emily has extensive writing and editing experience. In addition to numerous academic and professional publications, she also served as a community columnist for the Shreveport (LA) Times from 2003 through spring 2007. Her work has appeared in The Christian Science Monitor, the International Herald Tribune and the Los Angeles Times. She has been named a Graduate Fellow of the American Academy of Political and Social Science and a Fellow of the Society for New Communications Research.
