Steve Newman, PhD, is a contributing writer for The Conference Board ESG Center. A passionate sustainability leader, Steve draws on 20 years’ experience in the public and private sector as an academic, chief sustainability officer, managing director, and consultant. As a Chief Sustainability Officer, Steve applies a science-based and stakeholder-inclusive approach to strategic sustainable development, operation, impact measurement, and investor reporting. Steve leverages his technical science background to translate complex issues into relevant and meaningful opportunities that support, inspire, and connect business, people, and the planet.
Steve has also managed charitable organizations to develop and drive sustainable social, environmental, and operational initiatives that create shared value between business and society, as well as providing ESG and sustainability consultancy services to multinational corporations in the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Oceania.
Steve holds a PhD in ecology, with a background in environmental modeling and climate change. His research at the boundary of science and society has supported biodiversity conservation, resource management and climate action in Small Island Developing States, and he has published 27 peer-reviewed research articles. His output as a CSO has been recognized with awards from the UNGS, PATA, Hallbars, and Singapore Corporate Awards for sustainable business, sustainability reporting, strategy, and biodiversity.
