Terence Shields serves as Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO), Deputy General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for The Hartford. As CSO, Shields leads the Office of Sustainability as it guides The Hartford’s overall sustainability strategy, initiatives, governance, and disclosures. He oversees the company’s sustainability agenda through strategic stakeholder engagement, reporting and communication, and integration of sustainability principles and initiatives across businesses and functions.

As Deputy General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, Shields leads legal teams dedicated to corporate governance, securities law, capital markets transactions, mergers & acquisitions, subsidiary management, and sustainability law. He directly supports The Hartford’s Board of Directors and executive leadership team, participating in the development of agendas and materials for board and committee meetings and providing advice and counsel on all corporate law matters.

Prior to joining The Hartford in 2006, Mr. Shields served as an associate in the corporate law groups of Goodwin Procter LLP and Testa, Hurwitz & Thibeault LLP in Boston, MA. He earned his J.D. from Boston College Law School and his B.A. from the University of Michigan.
