Terry Gilliland is Principal at Steamboat Advisors, a consulting firm providing services to multiple segments of the healthcare ecosystem, including drug cost transparency, augmented intelligence and machine learning applied to large datasets to identify high-risk/highly vulnerable individuals, medical device manufacturers, public and commercial product strategy, as well as provider and payer operations. Gilliland is the former Executive Vice President, Healthcare Quality and Affordability at Blue Shield of California Blue Shield, a nonprofit health plan with over $20B in annual revenue serving over 4M members in the state’s commercial, individual and government markets. Prior to Blue Shield, he served as the Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Sentara Healthcare in Virginia where he was responsible for enterprise clinical performance including Sentara’s provider-owned 500,000-member health plan, physician alignment, and enterprise analytics, where his efforts culminated in recognition of Sentara as a nation-leading performer in overall clinical and operational performance. Prior to that, he spent 18 years at Kaiser Permanente in Maryland and Colorado in progressive operational roles and was a key leader in the turnaround performance of Kaiser Permanente, Mid-Atlantic States. Gilliland has enjoyed service on several Boards, including International Medical Assistance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving vulnerable populations in Central America as well as multiple hospital Boards in Virginia. He is deeply committed to increasing quality and access to education throughout the world as a vehicle of opportunity and equity. Gilliland is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and board-certified in Surgery, who completed his internship and residency at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology at Stanford University, a Doctor of Medicine from the University of California at Los Angeles and a Master of Science in Management from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
