William W. Lewis was a partner at McKinsey for 20 years. He was director of the McKinsey Global Institute, the firm’s economics think tank, from its founding in 1990 until his retirement from McKinsey in 2001.

Prior to his time at McKinsey, Bill held several policy-making positions in the U.S. government, including Acting United States Secretary Of Energy and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense. Earlier he served as Associate Provost at Princeton University and as Senior Financial Officer at the World Bank. A Rhodes Scholar,

Dr. Lewis holds a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Oxford University, and a B.S. with Honors from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Bill is Chairman of the Board of Holy Cross Hospital and a member of the boards of the Committee for Economic Development and the George C. Marshall Foundation. His work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and The Economist.
