For the last six years, I have been writing about attracting, acquiring, and retaining talent. I have recently had the opportunity to be a new hire myself, as I started working with the Conference Board in the middle of October.

In the last month, I have learned who does what and where to find things here, although I’m still learning new things every day. However, I’ve been most impressed with the generosity of spirit shown to me as a new employee. It’s not just “being nice to the new person,” but employees who have demonstrated genuine interest in me. 

What do I mean by generosity of spirit? Here are a few examples. At the end of my second week, the HR manager sent me an unsolicited email asking how my week had been. At the end of the third week, I had been corresponding with the finance manager about an expense report and when we fixed the problem, he emailed me back just to ask how my week had gone. The creative director, who will have additional work to do with me as an additional researcher, not only invited his leaders to an onboarding meeting with me, but also sent me an email afterwards saying how excited he was to work with me. And then, when I asked a colleague in the New York office to attend a meeting to take notes for a new project that I’m working on, she came back and thanked me for the opportunity. Her enthusiasm for the project has now resulted in her joining the project team.

Looking through the lens of my new employee experience, I was not surprised to see the 2018 Job Satisfaction report finding that the number one reason why employees are satisfied is the people they work with.[1] This finding is especially important for organizations that are confronted with low unemployment and high voluntary turnover rates, resulting in difficulties attracting and retaining employees. They need to be thinking about creating a compelling culture and whether they are hiring people that their employees want to work with. 

As we think about Thanksgiving and being thankful for all that we have in our lives, what are you doing to engender a spirit of generosity among your coworkers? How can you make someone’s day by doing something unexpected, out of the ordinary? How can we make kindness the ordinary? Do Good. Be Kind.
