Robert G. Eccles is a leading authority on the integration of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors in resource allocation decisions by companies and investors. He is also the world’s foremost academic expert on integrated reporting. He is focused on how to leverage capital markets to support sustainable development in a way that earns market returns for investors. At the core of his work are the concepts of materiality, corporate and investor transparency, and understanding the fiduciary duty of company board directors and investment fund trustees.

He is a visiting professor of management practice at the Said Business School, University of Oxford, where he is engaged in a number of research projects. Eccles has been a visiting lecturer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management and is a Berkeley social impact fellow at the Haas School of Business, University of California Berkeley. He was a professor at Harvard Business School and received tenure in 1989.

Eccles received an BS in Mathematics and an BS in humanities and science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a MA and PhD in sociology from Harvard University.
