Publication: Beyond Traditional Philanthropy: Corporate Citizenship Investing and Innovation

Corporate citizenship has expanded beyond traditional philanthropy -- charitable contributions to non-profits and employee volunteering. As part of their corporate citizenship efforts, companies are increasingly providing different forms of funding to a broader array of organizations to achieve both business and societal goals – including low-interest or no-interest loans, investing seed capital or more substantial venture capital, and supporting business incubation programs and specific for-profit firms.

This expanding frontier in corporate citizenship raises several interesting issues, which we will address in the roundtable discussion:

  • What is the appropriate role for companies in this arena, given existing government programs, major foundations, and for-profit investment and venture capital firms that are already investing in socially responsible businesses?
  • What are the types of investments and programs that companies are using?
  • How do companies decide which areas to focus on?
  • How do companies balance the desire for a social and financial return? Is it always win-win, or does something have to give?
  • Who takes the lead inside the company in running these programs, who is involved in the process, and what financial and non-financial criteria do they use?
  • How are investments tracked, measured, and reported?
  • What are the keys to effective and efficient social investing, including coordination and collaboration in advancing these initiatives, both internally and externally?
