Publication: The Role of the CEO in Driving ESG

Summary

US corporations – both public and private – are operating in a new environment. According to recent Conference Board research, 72% of firms say that environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues will have a significant and durable impact on boards over the next five years. And 90% of C-suite executives say that a shift to stakeholder capitalism is underway, with 80% saying it is occurring at their company.

CEOs are at helm in navigating these new pressures, whether it’s driving sustainability into a company’s business and culture, or deciding whether to take a stand on controversial social issues such as the recent Supreme Court decision in Dobbsv. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

To help CEOs navigate the challenges they are facing in driving ESG at their firm, The Conference Board ESG Center held a special Roundtable, exclusive to CEOs, to discuss the role of the CEO in the following key areas: how to (i) decide which ESG issues truly matter; (ii) integrate ESG into the company’s business strategy and operations; (iii) engage the board of directors constructively on ESG issues and align the C-suite and broader organization to execute the ESG agenda; and (iv) communicate your ESG story in an authentic, reliable, and effective way to multiple constituencies.
