Background

The healthcare sector is a consequential part of US society. In economic terms, it employs approximately 11 percent of the American workforce and accounts for 24 percent of government spending. From a social perspective, its mission is to save lives, improve health, and serve individuals’ and communities’ physical and mental well-being. It also has a notable environmental impact; the US healthcare system is responsible for approximately 10 percent of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions, 25 percent of global greenhouse emissions and produces nearly 7,000 tons of waste every single day.

This Roundtable discussion will focus on the current state of sustainability in the healthcare provider system, including:

  • What are the key sustainability issues in the healthcare provider landscape (hospitals, medical groups, clinics, pharmacies, etc.)
  • Role of others – government, insurance providers, suppliers (e.g., pharma), corporations, and non-profit donors – in advancing the sustainability of healthcare providers
  • How government regulations help and/or hinder with these issues
  • The expectations of key stakeholders: investors, workers, patients, communities, business partners, and regulators

Not a healthcare company? Key reasons why you should attend:

  1. If you care about your employees' physical and mental health. As we learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, a strong healthcare system is critical to the well-being of employees, communities, and society at large.
  2. If you care about the health of the U.S. economy. The healthcare sector employs approximately 11 percent of the American workforce and accounts for roughly 24 percent of government spending. (Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics & Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services)
  3. If you care about the environment. The U.S. healthcare sector is the second-largest industry contributing to landfill waste worldwide and a significant contributor to GHG emissions.
  4. If you want a framework for thinking about the sustainability of your own industry. The Roundtable will look at sustainability through multiple lenses: (1) the financial and operational sustainability of health care providers; (2) how they affect the welfare stakeholders, society, and the environment, and (3) how other players – from government to private sector companies -- affect the sustainability of the health care provider sector.
