This month we’d like to zero in on a hidden treasure available to you at The Conference Board and the Innovation & Productivity Center: Webcasts.
We recently presented the fourth in a series of Innovation-centred Webcasts, Driving Breakthrough Innovation. Pam Henderson, writer, speaker, and CEO of New Edge Inc., growth, strategy, and design advisers shared her insights on how to get beyond incremental innovation and set yourself up for a breakthrough. Cole Harris, director of portfolio planning at Sonos, and previously at Harley-Davidson, shared his real-life experience implementing this approach to innovation.
Henderson shared these insights:
- Start by defining your strategic opportunity area before jumping into (random) idea generation.
- Next, use 1) multifunctional team work to get to “lasting insights”, and 2) “articulating the unarticulated” by breaking traditional market insight rules by sampling unrepresentatively and zeroing in on “unusual users and uses.”
- Finally, the “breakthrough innovation maturity model” adds discipline to innovation efforts in organizational structure, culture, and strategy.
