THE 2018 EXCELLENCE IN NEW COMMUNICATIONS AWARDS
INNOVATION IN DIGITAL INNOVATION

Winning the “Innovation in Digital Innovation” award in the Nonprofit Division, LISC’s communication efforts were designed to meet the overwhelming parent demand for better educational opportunities within charter schools. By creating SchoolBuild, a one-stop shop for guidance and information regarding charter school facilities, it promotes transparency and real-time development updates. This tool makes it easier for school leaders to embark on real estate projects, increases schools’ access to capital markets, and provides relevant sector data.

 

THE ISSUE BEING ADDRESSED Access to high-quality public education sets the foundation for a healthy neighborhood and ensures that people, not just places, prosper. In many communities, charter schools are the only high-quality education option available and have played a pivotal role in education reform. The best ones have been hotbeds of innovation, presenting families with exciting educational choices and exceptional opportunities for their children. Today, more than 6,900 public schools operate under charters in the United States, educating 3.1 million children.

Still, there are over one million names on charter school waitlists across the country, and despite expansion within the sector, developing and renovating buildings remains a major hurdle for both new and existing public charter schools.
