A New Era of Disaster Philanthropy - How Companies Can Lead the Way

For many years, corporations have played a critical role in responding to natural disasters with dollars, in-kind donations, and volunteers.   But we are now on a cusp of new era in disaster philanthropy -- as companies recognize the extent to which natural disasters are increasing in frequency and intensity, socio-economically disadvantaged communities are being disproportionately affected, and the old approach of emotionally driven responses to natural disasters is not enough.

An upcoming Conference Board survey reveals that 54 percent of respondent companies’ disaster philanthropy practices plan to prioritize socially and economically vulnerable communities.  And companies have work to do in improving the efficiency of disaster philanthropy, and shifting resources toward stages of disaster relief that will have more enduring impact.

By watching this you will be able to:

  • Understand how to better address the needs of disadvantaged communities in every phase of a disaster – especially after first responders leave the scene and before federal financial relief and insurance arrive.
  • Learn ways to withstand the pressure from executives, employees, and others for an emotion-driven response to disasters, as well as to meet employees’ rising expectations.
  • Explore ways to build more effective relationships not only with nonprofits, but also with other companies with complementary competencies.
  • Find out how firms can shift resources from immediate relief to preparedness and long-term recovery and reconstruction.
  • Learn the critical roles that CEOs can play in the firm’s disaster philanthropy.

Who Should Attend: Senior-level corporate citizenship, corporate social responsibility, and philanthropy leaders; senior diversity, equity, and inclusion leaders; and corporate communication and governance executives.
