The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has been at the core of the Western response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. During the conflict, NATO has become more revitalized and united, and the Alliance has adapted generally well to one of the greatest challenges in its history. NATO’s leadership has been consistent in expressing its support for Ukraine “for as long as it takes” and in pressing its member states to provide greater amounts of military and other aid to Ukraine while remaining formally outside the conflict to avoid the risk of a wider war. NATO also adopted a new strategic concept at the Madrid Summit in 2022, is developing stronger partnerships in the Asia-Pacific, and is likely to expand to include both Sweden and Finland, which applied for membership shortly after the invasion of Ukraine.
