CED's Biannual Trustee Policy Summit: Insight Summary

/ Brief

On June 12, 2024, CED had the privilege of hosting its Biannual Trustee Policy Summit Inflection Point: Charting a Sustainable Path Forward in Washington. As in past years, this all-day event brought together speakers discussing both challenges and opportunities on some of the most consequential issues facing the Nation. Our speakers included current and former members of Congress, White House officials, economists, leading journalists, and, of course, our Trustees offering their essential perspective as business leaders.

Sessions at the Summit covered topics ranging from the impact of AI to the future of globalization, the war in Ukraine, and geopolitical tensions in Europe and the Indo-Pacific. The state of the US economy, our dangerous fiscal situation, and important domestic issues such as health care and the workforce, featured prominently. In this election year, we also discussed the political outlook, both the upcoming November elections and their implications for future policy. The Summit occurred as Congress was busy with markups of budget legislation, as the Administration was preparing for the G-7 Summit and the Ukraine Peace Conference, as the Federal Reserve met with an important update to expected future policy, and as Presidential and Congressional candidates are planning their Fall campaigns.

This report is intended to capture the major insights from the day and provide a flavor of the discussion, which was held under the Chatham House Rule to encourage open discussion among both speakers and Trustees. These insights will contribute to CED’s work for the remainder of the year and the future. Whether or not you were able to attend the Summit, we hope you find these insights valuable in this tumultuous year.

CED expresses its sincere thanks to the Summit’s sponsors, Adtalem Global Education Foundation, AlixPartners, the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, RW2 Enterprises, and Thermo Fisher Scientific, along with the Trustees and our guest speakers for making the Summit a success.
