At a time when anti-Asian discrimination, gun violence, and voting rights are at the fore, US corporations facing mounting pressure to take stands on social issues, which can overlap with hot-button political topics. The pressure to address social issues is unlikely to go away, as employees and others are looking to companies for leadership. Yet taking stances in a highly polarized environment can, if not handled appropriately, undermine the very trust that employees, customers, and others have in their companies.
On March 25th, the ESG Center held a roundtable discussion with about 100 executives on how companies decide whether, when, and how to take a stand on social issues. We will issue a full report on the topic in the coming weeks, but here are some of the key takeaways.
