Chinese President and Party Secretary Xi Jinping is indeed undertaking “reform” – it just doesn’t involve marketization or more conformity with Western norms, at least not yet. Instead, it involves a hybrid return to past ways and means, a phenomenon that has repeated many times for China. MNCs need to observe evolving developments carefully, with blinders off and open minds. New alignment imperatives and opportunities are likely in the offing.
