Insights and Solutions from the CED Healthcare Business Roundtable

This CED report shares the findings from a virtual roundtable hosted by the organization. The discussion brought together key stakeholders in skills training, including invitees from academia and a number of our Trustees to discuss challenges facing our health care system and offer solutions.

CED convened the virtual roundtable in partnership with Adtalem Global Education Foundation. It was chaired by Dr. Peter Hahn, President & CEO of University of Michigan Health – West, and moderated by Dr. Lori Esposito Murray, President of CED. The objective of the CED roundtable was for key health care stakeholders to share best practices in addressing health care workforce shortages; training healthcare workers, including identifying necessary skills; and planning for the future healthcare workforce.

As the report points out, the health care industry is facing enormous challenges recruiting and retaining workers. The industry is seeing high turnover rates, especially among aides and assistants. In terms of addressing retention issues, while salary is certainly a factor, training and professional development are also important. The report calls for systemic change, regulatory change, policy change, and business leadership to address an issue so critical to our economy and the health of all Americans.
