Moving Beyond the BRT Statement: Putting Stakeholder Capitalism into Practice

As many of us are following the online debate between Lucian Bebchuk and Marty Lipton on the BRT statement on the purpose of a corporation, there is strong evidence that there has, indeed, been a real and durable shift from a stockholder- to stakeholder-focused business model across industries.

In a recent Conference Board survey of hundreds of C-suite executives around the globe, 90% said that this shift to a multi-stakeholder focus is underway – and, perhaps even more telling, 80% said that it’s happening at their company. Those survey results, and others, will be discussed in a Conference Board report to be issued this autumn on what this tectonic change means in practice for the C-suite.

That report will also include insights gathered from roundtables held under the Chatham House Rule where we discussed what the shift to stakeholder capitalism means for each member
