Four European Union countries share a border with Russia; four share a border with Ukraine; Poland shares a border with both. The Russian invasion of Ukraine was a direct threat to the political and economic security of these countries, and the European Union has come together more strongly as a bloc in response to the invasion. While some countries such as Hungary have proven less supportive of some initiatives, the EU as a whole has an impressive record in the war’s first year. For the first time, the bloc gave military aid as a bloc; Ukraine and Moldova were offered an eventual path to membership; the bloc has adopted strong sanctions packages; the EU has proposed a plan for Ukrainian reconstruction, and member states have generously welcomed millions of Ukrainian refugees.
