European View: Euro Area sees major downturn in March and April

Confidence waned in March and will decline further in April. The evolution of the pandemic and the implementation of the post-lockdown phase will be key to shape the economic recovery. Government-funded short-term working schemes may facilitate the recovery. French data on furloughed workers show that these programs are widely used across the economy, including hospitality, manufacturing, and construction.
