Yesterday, we published a thoughtful essay by The Conference Board’s Thomas Singer, discussing how the key elements of an effective sustainability program can help companies manage and improve corporate performance during this time. A strong sustainability effort provides (1) a sense of corporate purpose that can motivate employees and guide decision-making; (2) a clearer understanding of what issues are truly material; (3) a broader perspective for problem-solving that can spur innovation; (4) a culture of collaboration; and (5) a high level of engagement with stakeholders. This is a good time to deploy that toolkit of sustainability strategies – and, as time permits, to begin thinking about bout how those strategies can be useful in the future.
