Since humans discovered fire, energy has been an essential factor in driving forward economic, industrial and social growth in every part of the globe. As demand rises due to growth of industrial production, a rising population requiring more transportation, more household appliances and the expansion of digital communications, finding cheap sources of energy has preoccupied businesses and governments.
For many years fossil fuels have been at the heart of most countries' energy mix and still account for nearly 80% of total primary energy supply. While the percentage of oil has decreased and gas increased between 1971 and 2019, the percentage of coal has remained about the same. Pressure is mounting to find new more efficient, low emission sources of energy. This challenge is particularly acute for European policymakers, with rising gas and electricity prices caused by post-Covid supply chain constraints and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In this webcast, guest speaker, Megan Richards, Senior Fellow German Marshall Fund of the United States, discusses challenges and opportunities of the clean energy transition and its political implications.
