Realizing in the 2000s that landfill volumes were dropping and market pressures were pushing customers to embrace different waste strategies, Waste Management concluded that participating in the circular economy was crucial for it to remain relevant to customers and their evolving needs. Today, the traditional landfill business accounts for only a small portion of the company’s revenue, and its circular economy initiatives have evolved and its focus has widened to look not only at capturing and returning waste materials to the production loop, but also identifying ways to produce items that are ultimately more recoverable.
