US Consumer Dynamics Report: Q2 2021

Economic and health concerns are down around the world, according to The Conference Board® Global Consumer Confidence Survey. This trend generally bodes well for consumer spending and a potential global recovery. However, survey results show that the US economy has recovered faster than Mexico and Canada, the US’ biggest trading partners, which may affect the future pace of the US economic rebound. Other insights from the survey:

  • The US faces new and reemerging concerns. While worries about the economy and health are waning in the US, concerns about inflation, debt, and climate change have risen. Inflation remains an issue to be watched. Concerns stemming from new widespread crises, climate events—and more broadly sustainability—may increase going forward, a reflection of the greater attention being paid globally to these topics, including by the US government.
  • US consumers are feeling better financially, which has supported spending. The rebound has not only benefitted services such as travel and out-of-home entertainment, but also product categories such as tech, home, and apparel. This positive spending trend should continue in the next several months, considering the additional stimulus checks for families with children starting in July.
