AI is one of the hottest topics for business—and government—right now. How do we regulate it? How do we adopt it? How do we deploy it? And, most importantly, how do we trust it to help us serve our customers better? Governments are rushing into the regulatory space. One example: a public blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights from The White House.

Brown University held its first summit on Digital Trust on March 31 and four critical themes emerged for how corporate leaders should consider approaching Generative AI.

Seek to understand all the dimensions on which Generative AI could intersect with their business—and learn from others
Invest in experimenting and learning about the opportunities to serve all stakeholders through the application of generative AI to the enterprise (not just shareholders)
Address this new technology in their enterprise risk management program
Boards and senior management will be well served by approaching this area with an open mind, a willingness to change, and a culture of continuous learning but a high sensitivity to security, data privacy, and appropriate governance.

IPSOS, a global marketing and opinion research firm, finds that people clearly want regulation but “how” remains an open question.

Skepticism about generative AI is growing. Consider the case of the family of Michael Schumacher, the German Formula 1 legend who suffered a traumatic and catastrophic brain injury during a ski trip to Switzerland in 2013. They are suing a publication that did an interview with an AI-generated version of the superstar allegedly created by software called Character.AI.

The pace of change is staggering. We forget that ChatGPT-3 was only made commonly available in November 2022, and already ChatGPT-4 is here.
