Leading with Purpose: Impact, Value, Experience 

Companies know that health benefits are important for attracting and retaining talent in a competitive hiring market. Yet creating a program that is comprehensive, competitive, and cost-effective has become increasingly difficult given rising healthcare costs and an increasingly unhealthy employee base.

When hundreds of experts and practitioners gathered to discuss employee health care, we took notes. Here are some of the highlights:

Companies need to offer benefits and wellness programs that are aligned with company culture.

  1. Successful benefits programs vary from company to company because they need to align with company culture and strategy. Programs and vendor partnerships may need to be customized or supplemented to suit the culture. As one benefits manager at a large energy company said, “There’s not one way to do well being. If you do it in a way that doesn’t fit your culture, it won’t work.”
  2. Companies with community or interest groups have a great resource for gaining a better understanding of what might be missing from existing benefits. Benefit programs can tap into those networks to find out what can be improved. For instance, learning that certain services are not readily available in-network, getting rid of duplicate authorizations for ongoing services, or eliminating cumbersome recertification processes.
