CEO Insight Minute: Is US Job Satisfaction on the Decline?

Workers are increasingly prioritizing positive work culture and experience over compensation, suggesting a shift in what drives satisfaction and retention.

Overall satisfaction remains high, but US workers are less content across all specific subcomponents of job satisfaction. The Job Satisfaction survey released by The Conference Board asks a series of 27 questions. The first 26 cover specific aspects (subcomponents) of job satisfaction. The final question asks respondents to rate their overall job satisfaction. In this, our latest survey (fielded in November 2023), there was a slight increase in overall job satisfaction, resulting in the highest rating since the survey’s inception in 1987. However, there was a notable discrepancy: across all 26 subcomponents, there was a decrease in satisfaction compared to 2022. This suggests that despite a general uptick, the long-term growth in US job satisfaction that this survey has recorded for the past 13 years might be at risk.
