Exit, Halt or Continue: The Russia Conundrum for International Business
Latest Press Release
Brussels, 30 March 2022 – As Putin continues to wage war on Ukraine, international companies in Russia are faced with a stark choice: to pull out, pause or continue their operations.
As companies make these decisions, they must consider the impact of the situation on their Russian employees. The Conference Board company members have been activating employee assistance programmes that address mental wellbeing, fear of sanctions or conviction, and feelings of shame.
‘Being Russian in an international business environment is an extremely lonely place right now. Our companies are reporting the responsibility that they feel towards these employees as they contemplate decisions on whether to cease operations in Russia,’ said Sara Murray, Managing Director, International for the Conference Board. She went on to say: ‘Advances on salaries to support Russian colleagues through financial hardship, or supporting relocations for employees who seek them are just two of the ways businesses are putting their people first.’
As the crisis develops, The Conference Board has found that companies are reporting increasing cases of discrimination against Russian employees. Both now and in the future, companies must build support for Russian employees’ well-being into their contingency planning.
