In a recent survey of 743 US workers by The Conference Board, respondents reported greater use of self-directed informal learning than that assigned by their organizations. While leaders should encourage autonomous learning, artificial intelligence (AI)-driven change means workers might need to learn specific, high-value skills quickly, requiring consistent and formal upskilling methods.
US workers acquire most of their learning on their own. Respondents indicate that their employers support self-directed learning—as they should. Extensive research shows that adult learners achieve better results and deeper understanding when they have more control over their learning. Although self-directed learning is vital for a strong learning culture, The Conference Board survey results indicate potential over-reliance on informal learning.
