Broadband Investments to Connect All Americans Announced

July 13, 2023

The Administration recently announced $42.5 billion in allocations to states for the High-Speed Internet Grant Program as part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, with states receiving between $107 million to $3.3 billion based on population and identified gaps in broadband access.

  • The program is part of the Administration’s goal of connecting every American household to high-speed internet by 2030; estimates show 8.5 million households and small businesses lack high-speed connections today with millions more facing limited coverage.
  • States—which had already begun assessing broadband needs—have until the end of the year to submit initial plans with final implementation plans likely coming in 2025.
  • The announcement was hailed by policymakers and industry participants as crucial for addressing gaps in broadband connectivity, adding to the growing list of federal investments in infrastructure and manufacturing aimed at boosting US resiliency and productivity.
