In 2021, The Conference Board hosted Roundtable discussions on authentic and effective corporate sustainability communication. With input from 300 executives across 150 companies, key takeaways included:

Defining Materiality: Align internally on materiality for disclosures. While companies and stakeholders prioritize material information, interpretations differ.
Balancing Transparency: Avoid credibility risks by disclosing both positive and negative impacts.
Enhancing Reporting Assurance: External assurance improves investor confidence, ratings, and internal controls but requires strategic implementation.
Navigating ESG Ratings: Companies must choose ESG rating firms strategically to optimize resources.

With evolving ESG scrutiny, regulations, and stakeholder expectations, The Conference Board is revisiting this topic in a two-part Roundtable Series to explore sustainability messaging challenges and engagement strategies.
