The spread of COVID-19 is having a dramatic impact on economic conditions across the US, but some areas will suffer more than others. Metro areas that rely on industries affected by social distancing, such as travel, hotels, entertainment, restaurants, and personal care, risk the biggest job losses. In addition, the large drop in oil prices is likely to significantly affect areas that rely on oil production. The map shows the metro areas with large shares of jobs in these highly affected industries. According to our analysis, Las Vegas will probably be the most affected metro area in the country. Other vacation destinations and oil-producing metro areas will be hard-hit as well. These areas will experience a longer, more severe recession.
