Saudi Peace Conference on the Ukraine War

August 17, 2023

Saudi Arabia recently hosted talks focusing on Ukraine’s peace plan. About 40 countries, including China, India, Brazil, Egypt, Indonesia, and Mexico, took part as well as the US, UK, and EU countries. Russia did not participate.

  • The conference sought “common ground that will pave the way to peace.” It agreed to set up working groups on several points in the plan and to hold a similar conference at a later date, perhaps this autumn.
  • China’s role will likely be important in any future developments arising from the conference, but it is still pursuing its own, quite different, plan.
  • The conference also marks a significant development in Saudi Arabia’s more active role in global diplomacy.
