The Hiroshima G-7 Summit

The leaders of the G7 countries (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States) and the European Union met in Hiroshima, Japan for the annual leaders’ summit, joined by key partners from around the world. This year, the event had a strong geopolitical focus: Ukraine, China, food security, and responding to the increasing clout of nations in the Global South.

On Ukraine, the leaders expressed unity in support but did not agree to ban all Russian exports. • China was also top on the agenda, the G7 issued a strong statement regarding Chinese economic coercion, while pairing that language with a moderating tone on overall relations with China.

Specific economic issues in the G7 were less prominent than in recent years given a crowded geopolitical agenda and easing of inflation concerns in most G7 countries since last year, but the leaders did address supply chains and global infrastructure.

The leaders of the Quad—Australia, India, Japan, the United States—adopted an increasingly ambitious agenda for cooperation beyond direct security cooperation.

There is renewed speculation that Japanese Prime Minister Kishida may call a snap election after a successful hosting of the G7 meeting.
