US-India State Visit

The state visit to Washington by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi—only the third state visit of the Biden Administration—signaled a new, deeper phase of US-India cooperation in a changing world.

  • Both sides have very high hopes for deepening all aspects of the relationship, including economic and military partnership.
  • Technology and defense cooperation will be a particular focus.
  • India will maintain an independent foreign policy and never be a formal military ally of the US in the same way as European or Asian treaty allies but the summit brings India and the US to their closest relationship ever and paves the way for deeper cooperation.
