Global plastic production and consumption is expected to double in the next ten years to help meet demands from a growing global population. Today, almost a third of the plastic waste is either disposed of improperly or leaks into the environment including water bodies such as lakes, rivers, and oceans.

As plastic pollution emerges as a global challenge, public concerns have created pressure to act.
