Visualize where the economy is, and where it’s headed with our new Global Business Cycle Tracers, updated monthly for 13 countries.
This new tool allows you to easily see the current and future state of each economy in 4 quadrants: (1) expansion, (2) slowdown, (3) recession, & (4) recovery.
Business cycle tracers are analytical tools to visualize where the economy is and where it is headed by employing composite business cycle indicators such as The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® (LEI)and The Conference Board Coincident Economic Index® (CEI).The four quadrants in the graph correspond to current or future states of the economy: expansion, slowdown, recession (contraction), and recovery. The CEI signifies the state of current economic conditions or where the economy is presently. The LEI provides an indication of where the economy is heading in the near term. In other words, the LEI provides a signal about the future state of the economy, and the CEI confirms the signal. The quadrants are determined by estimating whether the index is above or below its long-term average growth rate (trend) and whether the index is moving away from or closer to this trend.
