Workers at East and Gulf Coast ports called a strike on October 1, as negotiations with port operators stalled. The work stoppage shut down 36 ports, which if sustained could paralyze supply chains spanning the globe causing billions of dollars of GDP loss, layoffs, and higher inflation for shipped goods.
