As The Conference Board reported in May, gender and ethnic/racial diversity on boards is increasing, and many more companies are disclosing whether they have LGBTQ+ directors on their board. But diversity is more than these three traits and encompasses other personal and professional diversity as well. Importantly, it also includes cognitive diversity, which pertains to differences in people’s knowledge, views, and perspectives and how they approach problems and perceive, process, and interpret information.
At the same time that boards are focused on diversity, we have also heard how important it is for directors to have certain qualities in common, especially today: experience with strategic planning and managing crises, an understanding of the role of the board, an openness to change, and intellectual curiosity. It seems clear that the more the directors have in common in those areas, the easier it will be for the board to make the most of its diversity.
