As The Conference Board reported in May, gender and ethnic/racial diversity on boards is increasing, and many more companies are disclosing whether they have LGBTQ+ directors on their board. But diversity is more than these three traits and encompasses other personal and professional diversity as well. Importantly, it also includes cognitive diversity, which pertains to differences in people’s knowledge, views, and perspectives and how they approach problems and perceive, process, and interpret information.

At the same time that boards are focused on diversity, we have also heard how important it is for directors to have certain qualities in common, especially today: experience with strategic planning and managing crises, an understanding of the role of the board, an openness to change, and intellectual curiosity. It seems clear that the more the directors have in common in those areas, the easier it will be for the board to make the most of its diversity.

But how, in practice, do you take full advantage of the growing diversity in the boardroom? Please join us for a candid discussion under the Chatham House Rule on this topic. The agenda for the session will address:

Threshold questions

  • What do we mean by diversity
  • What is the state of diversity in boardrooms
  • How does diversity contribute to board effectiveness in practice
  • To what extent are we currently making the most of diversity in our boardrooms

What can we do to maximize the benefits of diversity?

  • Recruitment and onboarding
  • What happens inside the boardroom
  • What happens outside the boardroom
  • Board and committee leadership
  • Board evaluations
  • What to avoid
