Publication: Choosing Wisely: How Companies Can Make Decisions and a Difference on Social Issues
Companies are increasingly expected by many constituencies to take a stand on a variety of issues – the events of 2020 have accelerated this trend. Companies are now hearing from more and different stakeholders, and especially activist employees are bringing new (mainly social) issues to their company’s attention and expect their company to take action. However, companies have stakeholders on all sides of the political aisle and engaging with social issues comes with the risk of receiving backlash and reputational damage.
This roundtable was intended to help companies define and put in place processes to govern engagement with social issues. We focused on the context for corporations addressing social issues (what are the key social issues, what do stakeholders expect); the criteria that companies use in deciding whether, when, and how to respond; who is responsible for making such a call; and what happens after the initial response.
